Chiefs CEO Andrew Flexman said “We have worked hard to get a round robin match in Rotorua for the first time in a number years and it will be important for the people of Rotorua to get out and support the Chiefs so that we can justify playing matches in the region in the future. We also look forward to the Chiefs returning to Taranaki for two important matches in 2015.”

Last year's Te Matatini kapa haka cultural festival staged at Rotorua International Stadium has been nominated as a finalist in the 2014 NZ Association of Event Professionals (NZAEP) Event Awards. This recognition reflects the successful partnerships developed with Rotorua District Council through Events & Venues, Te Matatini Society and Te Arawa. |

Thirty-one event professionals and individual events from across the country have been named as finalists in various categories of the awards.
The NZAEP Event Awards have been re-launched this year with a new format to recognise emerging leaders in the events industry and events that have positively impacted on New Zealand, regional or local communities.
RDC’s Creative Communities portfolio lead, Cr Glenys Searancke, said it was great to see the Te Arawa-hosted Te Matatini festival recognised by the country’s event industry as one of last year’s best events.
“This recognition further enhances the event legacy that Rotorua continues to forge. The partnerships formed were a key aspect, with the council, Te Arawa, and Te Matatini national body collectively striving for the same goal, and clearly delivering one of the country’s top events last year.”
Cr Searancke said the Rotorua festival was a breakthrough event with record attendance, and far-reaching profile for Rotorua through New Zealand and overseas media channels.
“Over the four-day festival more than 50,000 people celebrated the best kapa haka the world has seen, with an additional 1645 performers and an event workforce of 1495. These are impressive numbers.
“We were also particularly proud of the way our council facilities accommodated the needs of Te Matatini and our Events & Venues team is to be congratulated for their massive efforts in ensuring the festival was delivered professionally and to a very high standard.”
More than 70 entries from across the country were received for nine different categories. Finalists for the Best NZ Owned Major Award category are:
•Te Matatini 2013 (Rotorua)
•Audi Quattro Winter Games NZ 2013
•Contact Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge
•New Zealand Festival
•Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow

August 28 in Rotorua is shaping up as a Hot August Night when the city gets to experience its biggest ever tribute music show on stage at the Energy Events Centre.
Internationally acclaimed Neil Diamond tribute artist Peter Byrne, and a thirty-piece orchestra, will be performing a two-hour faithful recreation of Diamond’s famous 1972 concert from the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles.
The live album, recorded at the historic concert and called Hot August Night, became Neil Diamond’s signature recording and went on to become one of the biggest selling albums in music history.
Recreating the original format of the Greek Theatre concert, Rotorua’s own Hot August Night show will feature Diamond classics including Sweet Caroline, I am I said, Song Sung Blue, Holly Holy, Cracklin’ Rosie, Cherry Cherry and the Crunchy Granola Suite.
Peter Byrne delivers these epic numbers with the spontaneous energy and sensuality of Neil Diamond, coupled with his own brand of superb musicianship. His show has even been endorsed by Neil Diamond himself who called it a “great tribute show.”
One Australian newspaper entertainment critic wrote that the day he saw a better Diamond, would be the day the man himself appeared on stage [The Mercury, Illawarra].
Byrne’s first performance of the Hot August Night production in 1995 was a 25th anniversary tribute to Diamond’s famous album and received a prolonged standing ovation from the 4000 strong audience at the Sydney Convention Centre. Since then the show has been performed to enthusiastic audiences, across the world, every August.
It will the first time the Hot August Night international stage show has been brought to New Zealand, with Rotorua being the first of just three New Zealand shows on the tour - the others being in Hamilton and Auckland.
Rotorua’s Hot August Night concert will be at the Energy Events Centre on 28 August, followed by a Hamilton show at the Founders’ Theatre on 29 August.
Grandstand seats for the Rotorua show start from $59.90, with seats at tables adjacent to the dance floor at $115 with a two-course dinner included. A full bar service will be available. There are also children’s, senior citizens’ and group rates on offer.
Tickets for the Rotorua show are on sale now from Rotorua Convention Centre‘s ticket office, or can be purchased online from www.ticketmaster.co.nz or by phone on 0800 111 999.

Having already proven themselves as one of New Zealand’s most dynamic companies on a national level through their critically acclaimed tours of Tama Ma (2009), Nga Hau E Wha (2011) and K Rd Strip (2013), Okareka Dance Company celebrate the world premiere of Mana Wahine, by coming to Rotorua on June 27th and 28th – the region which provides the company with the key influence to this brand new work.
Once again Okareka Dance Company chart new territory, demonstrating their continual mould-breaking pieces on an international level as well. America, Australia and China have witnessed the power of their work and most recently The Netherlands as part of the Holland Dance Festival. Artistic directors Taiaroa Royal and Taane Mete on this occasion lead a high calibre creative team to present a powerful new performance that personifies the strength of women.
“… our appetites are whetted – we can't wait to experience the performance in its completed form!”
- Theatreview (Mana Wahine preview, Hamilton Gardens)
The true story of Te Aokapurangi, a young maiden from Rotorua influences the storyline of this production. She was captured in battle by a tribe from the Far North and many years later she returned and single handily saved her people from slaughter. The story of Te Aokapurangi has been the pivotal inspiration behind this work. Her courage, determination and fearlessness fuels the choreographic style explored in this exciting new piece.
The basket of ideas accumulated over the last two years comes to fruition as the all-female cast carve the stage with dance, waiata and mesmerising imagery. Royal and Mete share the choreographic floor with World of WearableArt (WOW) artistic director Malia Johnston. Together with Johnston they ignite the stage with a unique movement vocabulary that is drawn from the tale of Te Aokapurangi and ancient mythology.
Okareka invites leading choreographers, dancers and designers when devising a new work and Mana Wahine is no exception. This process allows each artist to indulge their talents without restriction. It is from this that the highest level of creativity is achieved. It will also be the first time that the choreography will be layered in such a way that it becomes seamless. This co-authorship allows the work to develop organically.
The World Premiere of Mana Wahine will be held in Rotorua on Friday 27 June and will be followed by the “Matariki Under the Stars” national tour to 11 centres across New Zealand. Performers Bianca Hyslop, Maria Munkowits, Nancy Wijohn, Chrissy Kokiri and Jana Castillo have been selected for this work not just for their experience as dancers but, even more so, for their experience as women.
Okareka is excited to bring together a dynamic cast who will transcend ideas into their bodies, cultivating a fluid production that honours strength, honesty, integrity and energy – all beautiful attributes of women.
“The beauty of the physical/dance aspects of the play is that it drives the energy and fire of the production and keeps the audience absorbed"
– Theatreview (Paniora)
