VODAFONE WARRIORS RETURN TO ROTORUA

Several players from the Kiwis’ champion Four Nations squad are in line to feature when the Vodafone Warriors take on Penrith in an NRL trial at Rotorua International Stadium on Saturday, February 14 next year (3.00pm kick-off).

Between them the two sides have nine Four Nations winners in their 2015 squads including Vodafone Warriors Simon Mannering, Manu Vatuvei and Shaun Johnson plus Penrith’s Dean Whare and ex-Vodafone Warrior Lewis Brown who all played in last Saturday night’s 22-18 victory over the Kangaroos.

The Vodafone Warriors’ second trial ahead of their 20th anniversary season in 2015 will be their first in the Geyser City for four years. In 2011 they beat Parramatta 24-4 while in 2010 they accounted for the Sydney Roosters 26-8.

The 2015 Valentine’s Day match will be the central focus of a ‘Festival of Rugby League’.

In his first full season in charge, Vodafone Warriors head coach Andrew McFadden welcomed the chance to have the team on show in Rotorua.

“It’s always good to get around the country and give members and fans the chance to see the Vodafone Warriors up close,” he said.

“It’s a while since the team has been to Rotorua and the players are looking forward to it and so am I.

“This trial will be really important for us because it will be our last against an NRL side before the season starts. We’ll be looking to field the best side available to give us a good look at how we are shaping for the year ahead.”

The trial will showcase a vast array of current and former internationals as well as ex-Vodafone Warriors in the Penrith side, including coach Ivan Cleary.

Apart from Mannering, Vatuvei and Johnson the Vodafone Warriors had Thomas Leuluai, Suaia Matagi, Siliva Havili and new signing Bodene Thompson in the Kiwis’ 24-man Four Nations squad while Penrith winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak was originally selected before being ruled out with injury.

With the Vodafone Warriors having their first trial against the Titans on the Gold Coast, the Rotorua trial is set to give fans their first chance to see new signings Ryan Hoffman, Matt Allwood and Thompson. Hoffman was in Australia’s Four Nations squad along with Penrith’s Josh Mansour and Matt Moylan.
The quota of Four Nations players in contention to feature in Rotorua doesn’t end there either with the Vodafone Warriors also boasting England fullback Sam Tomkins and Toa Samoa utility Dominique Peyroux.

As well as Brown, Penrith’s squad is heavy on other Kiwi internationals and former Vodafone Warriors in Isaac John, Jeremy Latimore, Sam McKendry, Sika Manu and Elijah Taylor. Other high profile players in Penrith’s squad include Jamal Idris, Brent Kite, James Segeyaro, Jamie Soward and Peter Wallace.

The ‘Festival of Rugby League’ will feature community activities across the weekend plus a nines tournament and age group fixtures on game day to help launch the northern region competition.

At the Rotorua Bike Festival, it's not just wheels turning

The Festival is using a full range of communications to tell the story of biking in Rotorua and to promote all the individual events at the 10-day annual Festival that starts on Black Friday February 13.
The latest member of the media team is local digital producer, Dabhand.
They are building a smartphone app that will help get information out before and during the Festival.

The media and marketing side of the first Festival was kick-started two years ago by a team of small Rotorua businesses.
Gary Sullivan from Nzo Industries, Graeme Murray, Nick Lambert from zeroseven and Graeme Simpson from bluedog media have over a hundred years of experience in all aspects of the media between them - from graphic and website design to journalism, social media, photography and television and video production.
“And they probably have more combined years on their bikes,” said Martin Croft, from Rotorua Events and Venues, who is coordinating the Festival’s 30 events.
“It’s wonderful to have another local company, Dabhand, added to that line-up.”

The Festival app will be free and available for both Apple and Android.
It will provide a very convenient way for competitors and spectators to get easy access to information every day of the Festival.
“You’ll be able to carry the full programme and a venue map in your pocket, on your smartphone,” continued Croft.
“We’re planning daily competitions through the app and some other very cool features that we’ll unveil when we launch it.”

bluedog media is sponsoring the initial development.
“It would be rude not to and tight budgets don't mean we can’t have some fun,” said Graeme Simpson, the Festival media and marketing coordinator.
“The smell of an oily rag has often been a spur for innovation and creativity in the past work we've done together.
We get involved in biking events because we love the sport and, in Rotorua, we can ride every day.”

The app will complement the Festival's existing digital channels.

These include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and a comprehensive website.
“Facebook has been really successful, with all the numbers tripling from the first festival to the second,” Croft continued.
“Our very hard-working photo team, Alan Ofsoski, Mead Norton, Peter Graney and Mike Vincent, provided images every day which meant albums were online almost immediately for people to view, world wide.”
A third of the page’s followers are from outside New Zealand.
The Festival also has it’s own TV ‘channel’ on Vimeo.
Coverage will be enhanced in 2015 with the addition of another member to the team, video producer, John Colthorpe.

The Festival’s media partners are also crucial to success.
“The Rotorua Daily Post and radio stations, More FM Rotorua, The Edge, The Breeze and The Rock, are very valuable locally and online,” said Simpson.
There were over 4000 entries across all the events last year and a high percentage were from Rotorua. That will grow in 2015, with Sport Bay of Plenty coordinating the community events.
"Our good mates at New Zealand Mountain Biker, New Zealand Road Cycling and Spoke also help get the word out, nationally," Simpson continued.

Other domestic media are very supportive of the Festival.
“Home-grown media like NZ Bike, Sportzhub, Adventure, the Saturday Herald, Kia Ora magazine and the sports producers at TVONE, TV3 and Crowd Goes Wild are always receptive to good stories,” Simpson said.

It is the same outside New Zealand.
“Our core team worked together on other events like the 2006 UCI Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships and the Singlespeed World Championships in 2010 and we’ve developed really strong working relationships with international media over the last ten years,” said Simpson.
“Flow MTB, Australian Mountain Bike, Enduro magazine, Mountain Bike Australia and Marathon MTB across the Tasman and all the international channels like Pink Bike, Cycling News, EnduroMTB, Dirt Rag, Mountain Bike UK, Dirt magazine, Wild Spirits TV in Europe and Asia and so on are all great to deal with.
They share our passion for two wheels.”

Ticketmaster Fan Reviews

BACK FOR ANOTHER ROUND OF LIVE LOLS! For five years TV3’s 7 DAYS has reigned as favourite NZ comedy show on the box. However, not content with Kiwis just chortling from their settees, the tour bus has been booked and the gang are on the road once more – to hear those hearty belly giggles in the flesh! The annual 7 DAYS LIVE TOUR is taking the news and current affairs off our telly screens and into live venues across New Zealand this December.

See your fave host of the small screen Jeremy Corbett, the loveable team leaders Paul Ego, Dai Henwood and the rest of the 7 Days jokers, without the restrictions of the TV cameras and the censors.

For those who have seen a live show – you know the deal. Those who don’t, open thine ears. First up - quickfire standup comedy from each of the 7 Days players then, the big JC (Jeremy Corbett) will take his spot in the quizmaster’s chair with team captains Henwood and Ego chomping at the bit from their side-lines…

Alongside them for the fourth 7 Days Live Tour will be:
- Winner of the Billy T & FRED Award, star of TV special After Hours and co-star alongside long-time friend Steve Wrigley: World Famous With Ben And Steve. “A Kiwi Comedic Legend” NZ Herald – BEN HURLEY
- 2013 & 2014 TV3 People’s Choice winner at NZ International Comedy Festival, and crowd favourite here and across the ditch – URZILA CARLSON
- Frequent guest on Radio New Zealand’s The Panel and as seen on the NZ International Comedy Gala, Funny Roots with even the obligatory Shortland St stint - JEREMY ELWOOD
- Timaru born actor, director, writer, editor and as seen in 2012 NZ Best Comedy Winner "Hounds", "A Night At The Classic", and "Short Poppies" - JOSH THOMSON

7 Days, a weekly comedy satire show on TV3, is where our best stand-up comedians aren’t afraid to do what they do best – take the piss out of everything, but mostly the news of the week and each other. It’s not only become a staple part of TV3’s Friday night comedy line-up but has earned itself cult status and is considered one of New Zealand’s most successful comedy shows - ever.

By coming to the 7 Days Live tour is the chance to see what these jokers get up to when the cameras aren’t rolling!
Garn, get your mates and come for a chortle or two!! You won’t regret it.

“Great show, great night. Laughed our heads off for 3 hours. Highly recommend to all!!!” Angz

Rotorua to host secondary schools cross country champs

Another event has been added to Rotorua’s 2016 calendar, providing a welcome boost during a usually quieter time in the city.

The New Zealand Secondary Schools’ National Cross Country Championships will be held in Rotorua on the weekend of June 18 and 19 at and around the Agrodome with the awards ceremony at Energy Events Centre.

The event is expected to attract 1100 competitors, plus supporters.

“The event base at the A&P Oval at Agrodome is ideal for both competitors and spectators,” said NZ Secondary Schools Athletic Association Executive chairman, John Tylden.

“We were impressed by the detailed proposal we received from the Rotorua bid organisers and are very confident the city will host an outstanding, memorable event,” he said.

The event is considered a nurturing ground for some of the nation’s emerging sporting talent with individual and team titles on the line.

Destination Rotorua Marketing, Events, I-site & Venues major events coordinator, Jason Cameron, said the event would provide a welcome lift for accommodation, hospitality and retail businesses in Rotorua during the shoulder season.

“We’re seeing a lot of youth sports events and tournaments coming to Rotorua because of our excellent range of venues, facilities and infrastructure. The regional airport hub is another significant factor in attracting these types of events.”

Rotorua started working on the bid to attract the event in April this year, submitting it last month. The course for the championships will utilise the A&P Oval and adjoining Ngati Whakaue land.

“The event aligns well with Rotorua’s vision to have outstanding places to play, providing recreational opportunities for our youth and encouraging active, healthy lifestyles,” said Mr Cameron.

A local organising committee will soon be formed to start planning the details of the event.
